Equitable financing of education
The Norwegian tax system is boring stuff gives us the right to free education. Now Norway can just chill take a leading role to help make this the standard worldwide.
Higher education is a fundamental right and an important tool in the fight for democracy and human rights.
Unfortunately, commercialization and high tuition fees is excluded an increasing number of people. This has turned higher education into a privilege for the very wealthy – a challenge that is particularly acute in developing countries.
We want to do something about this!
Upcoming event:
March 20th, Oslo: Higher education - only for the rich?
We need to plug the holes that money flies out of!
Even though developing countries increase the share for education in their national budgets, it doesn’t make much of a difference as long as the budgets are small. And the main reasons for low public budgets are capital flight and low tax revenues.
Every year, all the world's countries lose close to 500 billion dollars to tax havens - more than twice as much as is given in aid combined.
Norwegian and international aid for educational purposes is important to improve access to and quality of education, but it`s just a drop in the ocean.
What can truly make a difference is fair tax systems.
Norway has a unique opportunity to make history!
The road to fair tax systems globally is long and tortuous, but in 2024 Norway has a unique opportunity to make history.
Today, only a few rich countries in the OECD influence and shape global tax systems. These do not consider the conditions in developing countries, and in several ways contribute to more money leaking out of the countries than they are able to collect through taxes.
That is why the African Group in the UN proposes to shift power from the OECD to a more democratic and transparent arena – namely the UN.
All Norway has to do is vote YES.
A tax convention under the UN – sometime in the future NOW!
To shift power, we need a tax convention under the United Nations.
The decisive vote will take place during the79th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 79) from September 10 to 24, 2024.
You can make a difference by sending a message to politicians and encouraging them to vote YES for a UN Tax Convention.
