Education as a "chain cutter"
In a country where the best schools are private-run and expensive, and where the government has invested poorly in improving the education system, Carmen Guerreiro has clear thoughts about the value of eduation for liberation:
- Coming from a country where education is basically the one major thing that is stopping our people from having a better quality of life, I can say that education has everything to do with liberation. Education is one of the main tools that lead to freedom, because it opens doors. It’s basically a "chain cutter". With no education, people live in the dark and are easily controlled by institutions, governments, religions and money. - How can the situation for education today become better?Education will become a priority when it's considered a priority. Most countries spend more money polluting the environment, making wars and devastating forests than they spend with education. It's a matter of priority for all. If people don't find it relevant, the government doesn't think it's the key for development, and NGOs have no support, how can we change things? In addition to this, I think education has to move into modernity. We can't have it be a failed institution, obsolete, like many others became. Students have to identify with the subjects, and subjects have to be in contemporary platforms.- How can YOU contribute to education for liberation? As a journalist, my job is to spread information, which is, in many ways, educational. My website was designed to share information about sustainability and how we can take this matter into our hands instead of only waiting for companies and governments to do something. The change starts with individuals, and they are the ones who can change mindsets and take change to their offices, friends, and local governments. So my job is to find and talk to specialists that can share their knowledge to empower normal people towards transformation.
