Expelled and prisoned for reading a poem
Ayat Al Qurmozi (21) was a student at the teacher’s college in Bahrain when she in 2011 was sentenced for one year in prison for reading a poem in critic og the regime. After being held under custody for a long period, experienced torture, house arrest and prison, she was pardoned by the King. A mass of people met her when she was released to honor her. Ayat, together with 500 other students, were expelled from the university because they had participated in protests. Among them, many were expelled only because they had “liked” a post on Facebook. For the students to resume their education, they had to sign a loyalty statement to the King, promising not to participate in any activity damaging the Kings reputation.
