Myanmar
SAIH began working in Myanmar in 2016, a country with major challenges linked to a lack of academic freedom and access to inclusive higher education.
Since the military coup on February 1, 2021, Myanmar has seen a political, economic, and humanitarian crisis with reports indicating over 4.000 persons killed, over 25.000 detained, and more than 2 million people displaced.
The situation for the country's higher education sector is no exception. The junta has imposed strict controls, suppressed academic freedom, and arrested thousands of students, educators and others involved in protests. The LGBTIQ+ community is also facing discrimination and sexual violence as part of the military’s oppressive tactics.
Despite the darkness, our partners still see hope and are determined to carry out their work despite the challenging circumstances. During this time the support from SAIH and the international community is more important than ever.
Due to the tense security situation in Myanmar, SAIH has chosen not to name our partners in the country.
